About the English Placement Test

Understand how the adaptive test works, what it measures and what your result can tell you about your current English.

Developed by Language Consultants – The English Grammar Club S.r.l., the test provides a practical starting point for choosing a course, planning further study or discussing your next language-learning objective.

Find out where your English is now

The English Placement Test is an adaptive online assessment designed to estimate your current level of English according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, commonly known as the CEFR.

It is not an official language certificate. It is a diagnostic and placement tool that helps you understand your current position and make a more informed decision about what to do next.

The test forms part of Art of Speaking, the language-assessment platform developed by Language Consultants and The English Grammar Club.

A broad indication of your current language knowledge

The assessment uses multiple-choice questions across several areas of English to build an estimate of your overall level.

01

Grammar

Questions explore how accurately you recognise and select grammatical structures across different levels of difficulty.

02

Vocabulary

The test examines your understanding of words, phrases, collocations and meaning in context.

03

Reading and meaning

Short contextualised tasks assess your ability to interpret written English and distinguish between plausible alternatives.

The test responds to your answers

Instead of presenting exactly the same fixed sequence to every learner, the system adjusts the level of subsequent questions according to your response pattern.

When you answer correctly

The test can introduce questions from a higher level, allowing the system to explore the upper limit of your current knowledge.

When you answer incorrectly

The test can present more accessible questions, helping it distinguish between an isolated error and a genuine boundary in your current ability.

Up to 60 questions

The General English assessment uses an adaptive pathway containing up to 60 multiple-choice questions.

The system considers your pattern of correct and incorrect responses across different difficulty levels before producing an indicative CEFR result.

There is no fixed time limit, so you can focus on each question without being assessed on speed.

From your first answer to your final result

The assessment gradually gathers evidence about the language you recognise and understand.

01

Begin the assessment

You answer a sequence of multiple-choice questions covering grammar, vocabulary and meaning in context.

02

The difficulty adjusts

Your answers influence the level of the questions that follow, creating a pathway that responds to your performance.

03

The estimate becomes more precise

The system looks for consistent evidence rather than basing your result on one particularly easy or difficult question.

04

Your CEFR level is calculated

Your response pattern is mapped to an indicative level on the CEFR scale from A1 to C2.

05

Review your result

You receive a level estimate, a short explanation and access to a review of your answers and explanations.

What your CEFR level means

The CEFR provides a shared international framework for describing language ability from A1, beginner, to C2, highly proficient.

Your result indicates the level at which your answers most consistently demonstrate control of the language tested.

It can help you choose an appropriate course, discuss training needs with a teacher or establish a starting point for future progress.

Understand the CEFR scale

Your result can help you

  • Choose an appropriate English course
  • Identify a realistic starting level
  • Discuss your needs with a teacher or trainer
  • Prepare for professional or academic development
  • Establish a baseline before further study
  • Track progress by retaking the assessment later

What the test does not measure

A placement result is useful only when its limitations are understood clearly.

It is not a certificate

The result is an indicative CEFR estimate. It cannot replace an official IELTS, Trinity, Cambridge or other recognised examination result.

It does not directly test speaking

Multiple-choice questions cannot fully measure pronunciation, fluency, interaction or your ability to communicate spontaneously.

It does not directly test extended writing

The assessment examines recognition and understanding, but it does not evaluate your ability to produce a structured written text.

A person’s English is a profile, not a single number.

You may perform at different levels in grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening, speaking and writing. The placement test provides a useful starting point, but a fuller assessment may be needed when an important professional, academic or examination decision depends on the result.

Designed for placement, guidance and informed decision-making

The assessment combines CEFR references, adaptive question selection and item review by experienced language educators.

CEFR aligned

Questions are organised according to increasing levels of linguistic complexity and mapped to the CEFR scale.

Adaptive pathway

The system adjusts question difficulty according to your developing pattern of responses.

Multiple language areas

The assessment considers grammar, vocabulary and reading-based interpretation rather than relying on one question type.

Regular review

The question bank and explanations are reviewed and updated to improve clarity, relevance and consistency.

A practical assessment for learners and organisations

Individual learners

Find a realistic starting point before beginning a course or returning to English after a break.

Professionals

Gain an initial indication of whether your current English is suitable for workplace communication and career objectives.

Students

Understand your current level before studying abroad, preparing for university or beginning examination preparation.

Teachers

Use the result as one source of information when recommending a course level or identifying areas for further assessment.

Companies and HR teams

Establish an initial language profile before creating groups or designing a corporate training pathway.

Examination candidates

Use the test as an early readiness indicator before beginning preparation for IELTS, Trinity or another recognised examination.

Take the test online without creating an account

No registration is required to begin the English Placement Test.

The assessment is web-based and can be completed using a desktop computer, tablet or mobile device. Clear progress information and large answer controls are provided throughout the test.

For the most reliable result, complete the assessment independently without using a dictionary, translator, artificial-intelligence tool or external assistance.

When an indicative result is not enough

You may need an official language qualification when applying for university, employment, professional registration, immigration or another formal process.
