English Speaking Performance Assessment

Speaking Check

A diagnostic evaluation of real-world English communication.

A placement test can estimate your knowledge of English. The Speaking Check explores what happens when you need to retrieve and use that knowledge in real-world conversation.

During a personalised 30-minute online session, an experienced language professional evaluates your fluency, vocabulary retrieval, grammatical control, pronunciation, listening, interaction and overall communication performance.

Knowing the answer is not the same as using English spontaneously

Multiple-choice assessments can provide a useful estimate of grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening ability.

They cannot fully show how quickly you retrieve language, how naturally you respond, how clearly you express an idea or how your communication changes when you feel uncertain or under pressure.

The Speaking Check adds the human dimension that an automated test cannot capture.

What you recognise and know

The Speaking Check explores

What you can use in real time

Your spoken English may not match your test result

Language performance is influenced by more than knowledge. It changes according to context, familiarity, time pressure, confidence and the demands of the conversation.

01

Retrieval

You may recognise vocabulary immediately but struggle to retrieve the same words while speaking.

02

Automaticity

You may understand grammar rules but still need too much time to apply them during conversation.

03

Confidence

Fear of making mistakes may reduce fluency and make familiar English feel temporarily inaccessible.

04

Interaction

Real conversation requires listening, responding, clarifying and adapting rather than selecting one correct answer.

Your English level is useful. Your speaking profile tells us more.

A clearer picture of your spoken communication

The Speaking Check considers how different aspects of your English work together during a real conversation.

Fluency

How smoothly you communicate, maintain speech and develop your ideas without excessive hesitation.

Vocabulary retrieval

How easily you access suitable words and expressions while responding spontaneously.

Grammatical control

How accurately and flexibly you use grammatical structures while concentrating on meaning.

Pronunciation

How clearly your speech can be understood, including sounds, stress, rhythm and intonation.

Listening and response

How effectively you understand questions, follow the conversation and respond appropriately.

Interaction

How naturally you take part in conversation, clarify meaning and adapt to the other speaker.

Range

How effectively you use different language structures and expressions to communicate more precise ideas.

Confidence and consistency

How stable your spoken performance remains when topics, questions or communication demands change.

A focused 30-minute online evaluation

The Speaking Check is designed to feel like a purposeful conversation rather than a formal examination.

Step 1

Book your session

Choose an available appointment and provide a few details about your goals and reasons for using English.

Step 2

Join the online conversation

You speak with an experienced evaluator through a guided conversation adapted to your apparent ability and objectives.

Step 3

Explore different speaking demands

The conversation may include personal topics, professional situations, opinions, explanations and spontaneous follow-up questions.

Step 4

Receive personalised feedback

You receive a clearer explanation of your spoken English, including strengths, possible barriers and useful next steps.

You do not need to prepare a speech or study specific material before the session.

The aim is to observe how your English works naturally, not to catch you out.

Feedback you can understand and use

The purpose of the Speaking Check is not simply to assign another label.

It is to explain what is already working, what may be limiting your communication and what kind of learning or practice is likely to help.

Your feedback is based on what is observed during the session and interpreted in relation to your communication needs.

Your feedback may include

  • An estimated spoken CEFR range
  • Your principal communication strengths
  • Areas that may be limiting fluency or clarity
  • Differences between your knowledge and real-time performance
  • Observations about vocabulary retrieval and grammatical control
  • Pronunciation or listening priorities where relevant
  • Practical recommendations for your next step
  • Suggested Art of Speaking resources or training pathways

The Art of Speaking approach

You are more than a score

Someone may achieve a strong placement-test result and still hesitate in conversation. Another person may make grammatical mistakes but communicate confidently and effectively.

The Speaking Check helps reveal these differences.

It places your estimated level within a wider communication profile that considers what you understand, what you can retrieve and how effectively you use English when interaction becomes real.

People often know more English than they can use.

The Speaking Check helps us understand the gap.

The Speaking Check is useful when a test result is not enough

Before you book

How long does the Speaking Check last?

The session lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Is the Speaking Check online?

Yes. The session takes place online, allowing you to join from a suitable quiet location with a reliable internet connection.

Do I need to complete a placement test first?

A placement-test result can provide useful context, but it is not necessarily required. The evaluator can explore your apparent level during the conversation.

Do I need to prepare anything?

No special preparation is required. You may be asked about your goals, experience and reasons for using English, but the conversation is designed to observe your natural communication.

Will I receive an official certificate?

No. The Speaking Check provides a professional evaluation and practical feedback, but it is not an official examination or accredited language qualification.

Will I be given a CEFR level?

Your feedback may include an estimated spoken CEFR range where appropriate. This estimate forms part of a broader explanation of your communication profile rather than acting as the only result.

What happens if I make a lot of mistakes?

Mistakes are expected and provide useful information. The aim is not to judge you but to understand how effectively you communicate and what may help you progress.

Can the Speaking Check be used for work or company training?

Yes. It can help professionals and organisations understand spoken communication needs before selecting or designing a training pathway.
