The English Placement Test is an adaptive online assessment designed to estimate your current level of English according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, commonly known as the CEFR.
It is not an official language certificate. It is a diagnostic and placement tool that helps you understand your current position and make a more informed decision about what to do next.
The test forms part of Art of Speaking, the language-assessment platform developed by Language Consultants and The English Grammar Club.
A broad indication of your current language knowledge
The assessment uses multiple-choice questions across several areas of English to build an estimate of your overall level.
Grammar
Questions explore how accurately you recognise and select grammatical structures across different levels of difficulty.
Vocabulary
The test examines your understanding of words, phrases, collocations and meaning in context.
Reading and meaning
Short contextualised tasks assess your ability to interpret written English and distinguish between plausible alternatives.
The test responds to your answers
Instead of presenting exactly the same fixed sequence to every learner, the system adjusts the level of subsequent questions according to your response pattern.
When you answer correctly
The test can introduce questions from a higher level, allowing the system to explore the upper limit of your current knowledge.
When you answer incorrectly
The test can present more accessible questions, helping it distinguish between an isolated error and a genuine boundary in your current ability.
The General English assessment uses an adaptive pathway containing up to 60 multiple-choice questions.
The system considers your pattern of correct and incorrect responses across different difficulty levels before producing an indicative CEFR result.
There is no fixed time limit, so you can focus on each question without being assessed on speed.

What the test does not measure
A placement result is useful only when its limitations are understood clearly.
It is not a certificate
The result is an indicative CEFR estimate. It cannot replace an official IELTS, Trinity, Cambridge or other recognised examination result.
It does not directly test speaking
Multiple-choice questions cannot fully measure pronunciation, fluency, interaction or your ability to communicate spontaneously.
It does not directly test extended writing
The assessment examines recognition and understanding, but it does not evaluate your ability to produce a structured written text.
You may perform at different levels in grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening, speaking and writing. The placement test provides a useful starting point, but a fuller assessment may be needed when an important professional, academic or examination decision depends on the result.

When an indicative result is not enough
You may need an official language qualification when applying for university, employment, professional registration, immigration or another formal process.

Before you begin
Is the English Placement Test free?
Yes. You can take the General English Placement Test without payment or registration.
How many questions are in the test?
The adaptive assessment contains up to 60 multiple-choice questions. The difficulty changes according to your answers as the system gathers evidence about your level.
How long does the test take?
Most learners complete it in approximately 10 to 20 minutes. There is no fixed time limit, so you can work carefully without being assessed on speed.
Is the result an official certificate?
No. The result is an indicative CEFR placement estimate and does not replace an official language examination or certificate.
Does the test assess speaking and writing?
The online test primarily assesses grammar, vocabulary and reading-based understanding. Speaking and extended writing require separate productive-skills assessment.
Can I retake the test?
Yes. You can retake the assessment. For a meaningful comparison, allow time for further study and language use before testing again.
Can companies use the test with employees?
Yes. The test can provide an initial indication of employee levels. For group formation, funded training or higher-stakes decisions, we recommend combining it with a needs analysis and speaking assessment.
